The Morecambe and Wise Show: Series One

Entered into Best Restoration and Preservation Project or Title by Television International Enterprises Archives Ltd

There was virtually nothing surviving from the first BBC Morecambe and Wise Show series. The colour tapes were wiped in the 1960’s and finding any complete episodes was unlikely. When the films were found in a disused cinema in Sierra Leone, they were in a very poor state. The only viable option to fully preserve the material was a ground up restoration of the programmes. This required expertise in both film and videotape restoration and knowledge of PAL colour technology to decode the colour subcarrier present in the films. This was only made possible by the support of BBC2.
